Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced she will not seek re-election in 2026, marking the end of a congressional career that has spanned nearly 40 years. The 85-year-old Democrat, who has represented San Francisco since 1987, will complete her current term in January 2027.
In a video message released Thursday, Pelosi reflected on her long service, emphasizing her efforts to secure billions in federal funding for San Francisco’s healthcare, housing, transportation, and environmental projects. She also highlighted key legislative milestones such as the Affordable Care Act and federal HIV/AIDS initiatives that she championed throughout her tenure.
President Joe Biden hailed Pelosi as “one of the most consequential Speakers in American history,” while former President Barack Obama praised her “unmatched leadership and resilience.” Vice President Kamala Harris described her as a “trailblazer who shattered ceilings for women in politics.”
Republican reactions were mixed — some lawmakers acknowledged her political skill and longevity, while others criticized her handling of partisan divisions and raised concerns about alleged conflicts of interest linked to stock trading.
Pelosi made history in 2007 as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, a role she held twice, including during key moments such as the passage of Obamacare and both impeachments of Donald Trump. Her retirement marks the close of a defining chapter in modern American politics.
