North Korean combat engineers assisting Russian forces have begun extensive mine-clearing operations in Russia’s Kursk region, months after helping to repel a Ukrainian incursion launched in August 2024. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the engineers are now focused on neutralizing explosives left behind by withdrawing Ukrainian troops.

The ministry released video footage showing North Korean engineering teams working alongside Russian sappers to defuse anti-tank mines, artillery shells, and various types of unexploded ordnance. Officials praised the North Korean personnel for their discipline, efficiency, and rapid mastery of Russian demining protocols.

Russian authorities stated that many of the recovered explosives originated from NATO-standard equipment supplied to Ukraine. The demining effort is being carried out in multiple waves to ensure that agricultural lands, villages, and key infrastructure can be safely restored for civilian use.

These operations underscore the growing military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, following the 2024 strategic partnership agreement signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The cross-border tensions in the area continue to shape the region’s security landscape, with both nations emphasizing long-term collaboration.
