The government on Sunday approved a revision in petroleum prices, increasing the rate of high-speed diesel by Rs6 per litre while keeping petrol prices unchanged. The Ministry of Finance issued the official notification late last night, and the new diesel price took effect from midnight.
Under the fresh notification, high-speed diesel is now priced at Rs284.44 per litre. Officials said the adjustment will remain in force until the next public announcement and reflected recent cost pressures in global energy markets and exchange-rate fluctuations.
Transport operators, farmers and businesses that rely on diesel for daily operations are expected to feel the immediate impact, industry representatives warned, as higher fuel costs typically translate into increased freight and logistics charges across the economy.
The government said petrol prices were left unchanged in this round of revisions, offering some relief to private motorists even as diesel consumers shoulder the additional burden. The Finance Ministry added that price changes will be monitored and revised in line with international oil prices and domestic fiscal considerations.
Analysts said the diesel hike could push up inflationary pressure in the short term, especially for goods with long supply chains. Consumer groups and opposition politicians may press the government for targeted relief measures for vulnerable sectors if the increase persists.
The official notification circulated by the Ministry of Finance states the updated tariffs are effective immediately and will remain valid "until further notice," giving authorities flexibility to revise rates again when market conditions change.
