The mother of social media personality Rajab Butt has denied allegations that her son was intoxicated, saying he was under the influence of prescribed medication rather than alcohol.
In a statement, she explained that Rajab frequently suffers from respiratory and throat issues during winter. He takes medicines that cause drowsiness, which, she said, may have been misunderstood as signs of intoxication. “He was not drunk. He was under medication,” she clarified.
She added that when she is with him, she relies on natural remedies such as hot water and herbal tea to manage his symptoms. However, because Rajab is currently abroad, he has had to depend more on medication to control seasonal illnesses.
Referring to religious and cultural values, Rajab’s mother said her son does not consume alcohol. “My son is Hussaini, not Yazidi. Alcohol is forbidden in our culture and religion,” she stated. She said people were making assumptions simply because he lives in a country where drinking is common and socially acceptable.
The clarification came after a video chat featuring Rajab Butt went viral a few days ago. In the clip, he appeared drowsy and was heard using inappropriate language while speaking with friends, prompting widespread speculation that he was intoxicated.
Rajab’s family insists the incident was misinterpreted and that the viral footage reflected medication-induced drowsiness rather than alcohol consumption.
