In a historic development, Chairman Senate Yousuf Raza Gillani has announced the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which was passed with an overwhelming two-thirds majority — 64 votes in favor and none against.

The Upper House session, presided over by Chairman Gillani, saw the Law Minister presenting each clause of the amendment separately. During the process, PTI senators staged a strong protest, tearing copies of the bill and gathering in front of the Chairman’s dais in opposition to the proceedings.

Despite the uproar, the voting process continued smoothly, with each clause — from Clause 1 to Clause 59 — being approved by a two-thirds majority. Clauses 1 and 2 received 64 votes in favor and 2 against, while most others passed without any opposition.

In a notable political move, two senators broke party ranks: JUI-F Senator Ahmad Khan and PTI Senator Saifullah Abro both voted in favor of the amendment, defying their respective party lines.

The extensive amendment process concluded with Clause 59, officially marking the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill. The approval signifies a rare moment of parliamentary consensus, underscoring a significant step in Pakistan’s constitutional evolution.
