U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Nigeria, declaring that Washington is ready for “swift, severe, and decisive” military action if the Nigerian government fails to stop the ongoing killings of Christians in the country.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that he has directed the U.S. Department of Defense to prepare potential military responses and has suspended all aid and assistance to Nigeria effective immediately. He condemned Nigeria’s leadership, calling the country “disgraced” for its inaction against terrorist groups targeting Christian communities.
“If America acts,” Trump said, “our response will be fast, frightening, and decisive — just as these terrorists attack our beloved Christian brothers and sisters.”
While the U.S. Department of Defense declined to comment, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on social media that “the Department of War is ready. Either Nigeria protects its Christian citizens, or we will eliminate the terrorists responsible.”
The Nigerian government has not officially responded to Trump’s remarks, though its Foreign Ministry stated separately that Nigeria remains committed to fighting terrorism and extremism while maintaining close ties with the United States.
Earlier, the U.S. government had re-added Nigeria to its list of “countries of particular concern” over violations of religious freedom — a list that also includes China, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, and Pakistan. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rejected the accusations, asserting that Nigeria “does not tolerate religious persecution” and continues to ensure the protection of all faith groups.
