Veteran Indian Singer and Actress Sulakshana Pandit Passes Away at 71 in Mumbai



Renowned Indian playback singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit passed away at the age of 71 on November 6 after a prolonged illness. She died of a cardiac arrest at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital around 8 p.m., according to her brother, music composer Lalit Pandit. Her funeral was held the following afternoon on November 7.


Sulakshana Pandit belonged to the distinguished Mewati Gharana, a family deeply rooted in Indian classical music. She was the niece of legendary vocalist Pandit Jasraj and the sister of famous music composer duo Jatin-Lalit, who have composed numerous Bollywood hits.


A celebrated voice of the 1970s and 1980s, Sulakshana sang alongside legendary artists such as Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, and Mukesh, contributing to what is often remembered as the golden era of Hindi cinema.


In addition to her singing career, she was also an accomplished actress, appearing in several successful films including Uljhan, Hera Pheri, Apnapan, Khandaan, and Waqt Ki Deewar. She starred opposite leading Bollywood icons like Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, and Shashi Kapoor. Her last film was Do Waqt Ki Roti in 1988.


Her death marks the end of an era for Indian cinema and music, leaving behind a legacy that shaped Bollywood’s melodic identity for decades.
