A tragic incident occurred in Karachi’s Korangi Mehran Town, where an eight-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an open sewer manhole, highlighting once again the dangers posed by uncovered drainage infrastructure in the city.
According to police, the deceased child was identified as Dilbar. Family members said he was the only son of his parents and was playing with friends in the neighborhood when he accidentally fell into the open manhole.
Following the incident, local residents and relatives rushed to the spot and managed to retrieve the child through self-efforts. However, he was found dead by the time he was pulled out.
The victim’s family stated that the manhole had been without a cover for the past one to one-and-a-half months, despite repeated complaints. They demanded that authorities take immediate notice of the incident and ensure that proper covers are installed on manholes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
After completion of legal formalities at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, the child’s body was handed over to the family and brought home. Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) workers gathered at the victim’s residence in Mehran Town to express solidarity with the grieving family.
Volunteers from the Fix It organization were also present in the area. During this time, a brief verbal altercation reportedly took place between PPP workers and Fix It volunteers, adding tension to the already distressing situation.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about civic negligence and the lack of timely action by authorities in securing hazardous open manholes across Karachi.
