Technology giant Meta is reassessing Instagram’s policies and features in an effort to re-engage teenage users, as internal reviews reveal a noticeable decline in youth interest over recent years, particularly in developed countries.
According to company assessments, platforms such as TikTok and YouTube have rapidly gained popularity among younger audiences, drawing attention away from Instagram. This shift has prompted Meta to place the return of teen users among its top strategic priorities.
To achieve this goal, Meta is working on changes to Instagram’s algorithm, improving teen-focused features, and expanding partnerships with content creators. The company aims to make the platform more appealing to younger users by aligning content discovery and engagement tools with evolving digital trends.
These efforts come at a time when Meta is also facing mounting legal and regulatory scrutiny. More than 40 US states have filed lawsuits accusing the company of harming teenagers’ mental health through its social media platforms. As a result, governments are considering stricter regulations targeting youth online safety.
In response to these concerns, Meta has already introduced “Teen Accounts,” which automatically apply stricter privacy settings. These accounts limit messages from strangers, restrict access to sensitive or harmful content, and reduce exposure to risky online interactions to create a safer digital environment for minors.
Experts warn that if Meta fails to regain the trust of younger users, it could face even tougher regulations in the future, including stricter feature limitations or mandatory age-verification laws. The success of Meta’s renewed strategy may therefore play a crucial role in shaping the company’s long-term position in the competitive social media landscape.
