Britain’s leading financial daily Financial Times has described Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, as an expert of multidimensional foreign policy, saying he has emerged as an effective strategic leader in a rapidly changing global order.
According to the report, shifting global politics has opened a new yet complex phase for so-called “middle powers,” requiring careful balancing between major global players. The newspaper noted that Field Marshal Asim Munir stands among the most successful “multi-aligners” navigating this challenging environment.
The Financial Times highlighted that Field Marshal Munir has demonstrated exceptional skill in aligning with former US President Donald Trump, calling it a rare diplomatic achievement for a leader from a middle-power state. It described him as a clear example of a successful multilateral strategist and a strong practitioner of middle-power diplomacy.
The report said Pakistan’s leadership has remained actively engaged with Washington, Beijing, Riyadh, and Tehran simultaneously, crediting Field Marshal Munir for creating new diplomatic opportunities for Pakistan amid shifting international dynamics. His approach, the paper added, has helped reposition Pakistan more effectively on the global stage.
According to the analysis, timely engagement, diplomatic courtesy, and a measured tone in dealings with Trump proved particularly effective, allowing Pakistan to navigate sensitive geopolitical transitions with relative success.
In contrast, the Financial Times observed that India appeared frustrated by Pakistan’s diplomatic gains. It said New Delhi struggled to adapt to changing global conditions and Trump’s unconventional style, making the “middle power” strategy more difficult than anticipated for India.
The newspaper concluded that India’s diplomatic setbacks have complicated its middle-power ambitions, while Pakistan, under Field Marshal Asim Munir’s strategic leadership, has managed to advance its foreign policy objectives in an increasingly competitive global environment.
