Surya Kumar Yadav’s Dip in Form Raises Concerns for India Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026

With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, India’s preparations have been clouded by the declining form of captain Surya Kumar Yadav, whose recent performances have raised concerns within the team management.

Surya Kumar once again failed to deliver in the third T20 match against South Africa, losing his wicket while attempting to settle at the crease. His struggles have been a recurring theme throughout the year, with the star batter unable to regain his trademark consistency in the shortest format.

Statistics from the ongoing season paint a worrying picture for India. Surya Kumar Yadav has averaged below 15 runs in T20 cricket this year, while his strike rate has dropped to 126.41—figures well below expectations for a player known for his explosive batting.

India’s concerns are compounded by the poor form of vice-captain Shubman Gill, who has also been finding it difficult to convert starts into meaningful scores. The lack of runs from senior batters has placed added pressure on the rest of the batting lineup.

Following the five-match T20 series against South Africa, India is scheduled to play another five-match series against New Zealand, leaving limited time for senior players to rediscover form before major tournaments.

Team management has emphasized that both Surya Kumar Yadav and Shubman Gill must adopt a more responsible approach at the crease to ease the burden on in-form batter Abhishek Sharma, who has been carrying much of the batting responsibility.

It is worth noting that India will co-host the T20 World Cup next February, making the current form slump of key players a significant concern as expectations continue to rise ahead of the global event.
