Renowned American magazine The National Interest has strongly endorsed Pakistan’s position on the Indus Waters Treaty, sharply criticizing India’s recent moves against the decades-old water-sharing agreement.
According to the magazine, India’s decision to suspend aspects of the Indus Waters Treaty has pushed water politics in South Asia onto a dangerous path, increasing the risk of regional instability and heightened tensions between nuclear-armed neighbors.
In its report, The National Interest stated that India’s development of projects such as the Dulhasti Stage-II violates the spirit and framework of the Indus Waters Treaty. The publication warned that such actions could have serious consequences not only for Pakistan but for the entire region.
The magazine accused India of attempting to use water as a strategic weapon, calling the approach a clear violation of international law and global norms. It highlighted that South Asia is already facing a severe water crisis, and politicizing water resources under these circumstances could trigger a major humanitarian disaster.
The report further noted that India’s suspension of water data sharing with Pakistan constitutes an open breach of international obligations. It emphasized that international arbitration courts have already clarified that India does not have the authority to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.
The National Interest stressed that the Indus Waters Treaty serves as a cornerstone for food security in South Asia and legally obligates India to ensure water flows from the western rivers to Pakistan.
Concluding its analysis, the magazine stated that India’s attempts to weaponize water are unacceptable under international law and global judicial standards. It urged the international community to take the issue seriously and play an active role in preventing further escalation over water resources in the region.
