Following setbacks suffered during recent tensions with Pakistan, the Indian Army has signed a major defense contract worth Rs 293 billion for an indigenously developed long-range rocket launcher system known as Suryastra, according to Indian media reports.
The deal was finalized under emergency procurement powers with Pune-based private defense firm NIBE Limited. The contract aims to strengthen India’s long-range strike capabilities through locally manufactured systems.
Under the agreement, the Indian Army will receive the advanced long-range rocket launcher system Suryastra, developed domestically with technical collaboration from Israeli defense company Elbit Systems. The system is designed to enhance India’s battlefield firepower and precision strike capacity.
The Suryastra rocket launcher is capable of engaging targets at ranges of up to 150 and 300 kilometers, significantly extending the Indian Army’s operational reach.
NIBE Limited confirmed the development in a formal disclosure submitted on Friday to the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange, validating media reports about the contract.
The agreement also includes the manufacturing and supply of ground-based equipment, auxiliary systems, and ammunition for a universal rocket launcher platform. The system can fire multiple types of rockets and is designed for accurate ground-to-ground strikes.
Indian media described Suryastra as the country’s first fully indigenous universal multi-caliber rocket launcher, capable of simultaneously engaging multiple targets, marking a significant milestone in India’s domestic defense manufacturing efforts.
