Lifestyle Monitoring Cell Established
FBR has set up a dedicated Lifestyle Monitoring Cell comprising 40 investigative officers. This team will examine social media accounts to identify individuals displaying extravagant lifestyles that do not match their declared income. The monitoring will focus on luxury cars, expensive jewelry, lavish weddings, and other high-end expenditures. According to FBR, publicly available social media information will be analyzed to initiate tax evasion cases against these individuals.
Data on 100,000 Influencers
Sources reveal that FBR has collected data on nearly 100,000 social media personalities showcasing luxurious lifestyles. Their tax filings will be cross-checked against their online activities to detect discrepancies between declared income and actual spending.
Focus on Punjab
Senator Faisal Vawda suggested that FBR begin enforcement in Punjab, which has the highest number of internet users, as it is expected to yield the most revenue. He emphasized that focusing on TikTokers and influencers in Punjab would improve tax collection efficiency.
Experts Raise Concerns
The Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) and Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) urged the government to reduce the tax burden on freelancers and content creators. They recommended exempting educational and informative content creators from strict taxation so they can continue generating foreign exchange for the country.
Conclusion
FBR’s initiative aims to curb tax evasion among social media influencers. Experts advise influencers to ensure their tax filings are accurate and complete to avoid any legal complications.
