A fresh case of polio has been confirmed in Hyderabad district of Sindh, raising Pakistan’s total reported polio cases this year to 27, officials from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced on Monday.
This is the seventh polio case reported in Sindh so far in 2025. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains the hardest-hit province, with 18 cases; Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan have recorded one case each.
In response, health authorities have renewed their appeal to parents to ensure that their children under five years old receive polio drops in every campaign. The next nationwide vaccination campaign is scheduled for October 13-19, during which over 400,000 polio workers will make door-to-door visits to cover children across the country.
Officials warn that vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, and security challenges in some regions continue to hamper eradication efforts. The NIH also noted that although a Sub-National Polio Vaccination Campaign was held in September across 88 districts (including Hyderabad), more concerted efforts will be needed to fully interrupt virus transmission.
