Russia and Iran have signed a significant agreement to construct new nuclear power plants in Iran, deepening cooperation between the two countries amid shifting global alliances.
The deal, announced on Monday, will see Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom assist Iran in expanding its civilian nuclear energy capacity. According to officials, the agreement includes the development of multiple power units, technical training, and long-term fuel supply arrangements.
Iranian leaders hailed the agreement as a “strategic partnership” that would strengthen the country’s energy independence. They emphasized that the plants are intended strictly for peaceful, civilian purposes, in line with international commitments.
Russian officials described the project as a symbol of Moscow’s support for Tehran, particularly at a time when both nations face Western sanctions. Analysts note that the collaboration could raise concerns in Washington and European capitals, given the sensitive nature of nuclear technology.
Construction timelines have not been disclosed, but initial work is expected to begin later this year. If completed as planned, the power plants will play a key role in Iran’s efforts to diversify its energy resources while also reinforcing Russia’s influence in the Middle East.
