Abu Dhabi: Sri Lanka secured a crucial win over Afghanistan by 6 wickets in their final Group B fixture of Asia Cup 2025, eliminating Afghanistan from the tournament and confirming their own place in the Super 4s.
Afghanistan, winning the toss, chose to bat first. They posted a competitive total of 169/8 in their 20 overs. The innings was electrified by a late charge from veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, who smashed 60 runs off just 22 balls, including five sixes in the final over, helping his side recover from a shaky position.
However, in response Sri Lanka’s chase was steady. Kusal Mendis played a key role, remaining unbeaten on 74 off 52 balls*, and guided his team to victory with overs to spare. Sri Lanka’s batting lineup held firm under pressure and avoided collapse despite some early Afghan breakthroughs.
Sri Lanka bowlers also delivered well — Nuwan Thushara was particularly effective, snaring important wickets in the powerplay to put Afghanistan on the back foot early.
With this win, Sri Lanka joins Bangladesh in the Super 4 round. Afghanistan’s Asia Cup campaign ends here.
