India has named Shubman Gill as its new One Day International (ODI) captain ahead of the upcoming series in Australia, a significant shift in leadership.
Rohit Sharma, who previously led the ODI side, will remain in the squad but is no longer captain.
Gill already leads India in Test cricket, and this move further cements his role in all formats. He will be supported by Shreyas Iyer, who has been named vice-captain for the ODI series.
According to BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, the decision to replace Rohit Sharma was made with an eye toward team planning ahead of the 2027 World Cup, and was driven by the need to give Gill sufficient time to settle into the role.
