OpenAI has launched a new parental control system for ChatGPT, aimed at making the AI chatbot safer and more suitable for teenagers. The feature allows parents and teens to link their accounts, giving guardians greater oversight of how the platform is used.

According to OpenAI, the system enables parents to apply age-appropriate safeguards by default. They can also customize settings, such as turning off ChatGPT’s memory function, limiting voice and image generation, or setting “quiet hours” to restrict usage at specific times.

The update comes in response to rising concerns about AI’s impact on teen mental health. The parental controls will notify guardians if ChatGPT detects signs of acute distress during use, though parents will not have full access to chat transcripts in order to protect privacy.

The rollout begins with the web version, while mobile app support is expected in the coming weeks. OpenAI emphasized that the move is designed to balance safety, privacy, and responsible use of AI technology for younger audiences.
