The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has unanimously approved the decision to ban Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

According to the official statement, the decision was made following a request from the Punjab government, after the Interior Ministry presented a summary detailing TLP’s violent and extremist activities. Senior Punjab officials also briefed the meeting via video link about the group’s involvement in violent protests and public unrest.

The briefing revealed that since its formation in 2016, TLP has repeatedly incited unrest and engaged in violent demonstrations across Pakistan. The party was previously banned in 2021, but the restriction was lifted six months later on the condition that it would refrain from future violence—a commitment it has since violated.

Officials further stated that security personnel and innocent citizens lost their lives in previous TLP-led protests, leading to the government’s latest move to restore law and order and uphold the rule of law in the country.
