Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense has officially confirmed a $9 billion defense agreement with China, marking the country’s largest-ever military purchase from Beijing. The deal, announced on October 16, 2025, includes the acquisition of 42 Chengdu J-10C multirole fighter jets, along with submarines, support systems, and other defense assets.

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin stated that the procurement aims to modernize Indonesia’s air force and strengthen its strategic capabilities amid rising Indo-Pacific tensions. Deliveries of the new aircraft are expected to begin in 2027, making this Indonesia’s first major purchase of Chinese-made fighter jets.

The J-10C jets are known for their advanced radar systems, long-range missiles, and agility, making them a cost-effective choice for air defense operations. This acquisition complements Indonesia’s existing fleet of Russian Sukhoi and MiG jets, signaling a diversified defense strategy and growing cooperation with multiple global partners.

The agreement follows months of negotiations between Jakarta and Beijing and highlights Indonesia’s focus on balancing affordability with technological sophistication. It also strengthens defense ties with China, even as Indonesia continues discussions with France for the purchase of Rafale fighter jets, demonstrating a multi-source procurement policy for national security.
