Cameroon’s Paul Biya, the world’s oldest serving head of state, has been re-elected for an unprecedented eighth consecutive term at the age of 92, according to official results released on Monday.

The electoral commission announced that Biya secured 53.66% of the vote, while his former ally Issa Tchiroma Bakary trailed behind with 35.19%. The presidential election, held on October 12, was marred by unrest, with clashes between opposition supporters and security forces reported in several regions.

Tensions have escalated further following the announcement of results. Local media and rights observers reported that at least four people were killed in the commercial hub of Douala during violent confrontations on Sunday night.

Biya, who first assumed office in 1982, has now ruled Cameroon for over four decades, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the world. He previously removed constitutional term limits in 2008, allowing him to remain in power indefinitely. His last victory in 2018, with 71% of the vote, was widely criticized by international observers as deeply flawed.

Analysts warn that the latest results could intensify political instability in the country, where growing public frustration, economic hardship, and regional conflicts continue to challenge Biya’s long-standing rule.
