At the annual congress of the International Press Institute (IPI) held in Vienna, Austria, seven journalists from around the world were awarded the Press Freedom Heroes Award in recognition of their commitment to journalism under challenging and dangerous conditions. Among the honorees was Mariam Abu Daqqa, a Palestinian journalist who was martyred on August 25, 2025, by Israeli forces while reporting in the field.
The 2025 awards also recognized journalists from Ukraine, Hong Kong, the United States, Peru, Georgia, Ethiopia, and Palestine. Recipients included Victoria Roshchina (Ukraine), Jimmy Lai (Hong Kong), Martin Baran (USA), Gustavo Gorriti (Peru), Mzia Amaglobeli (Georgia), and Tesfay Waldis (Ethiopia).
Two of the awards were given posthumously to journalists who lost their lives while performing their duties: Mariam Abu Daqqa and Victoria Roshchina, highlighting the ultimate sacrifices made in the service of press freedom.
Additionally, the Free Media Pioneer Award was presented to Hungary’s independent media for their courageous reporting. The congress attendees paid tribute to journalists worldwide who risk their lives to uphold the principles of free and independent journalism, emphasizing the ongoing global struggle for press freedom.
