A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck western Turkey on Tuesday, causing structural damage to several buildings but no immediate reports of casualties.
According to seismological reports, the quake’s epicenter was located in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir province, at a shallow depth of approximately 6 kilometers.
The tremors were strongly felt across several major cities, including Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir, prompting panic among residents. Witnesses reported that people rushed out of their homes in fear as the ground shook.
Local authorities have begun assessing the extent of the damage, particularly in Sındırgı, where several buildings reportedly sustained cracks and minor structural failures. Emergency response teams are on alert as aftershocks continue to be felt in the region.
Turkey sits on several major fault lines and experiences frequent seismic activity. The country’s last major quake earlier this year also caused significant property damage but limited casualties due to improved building standards.
