At the request of the United States, British troops have been deployed to Israel to oversee the implementation of the Gaza peace plan, according to reports from British media. The deployment includes a senior British commander and a small contingent of soldiers tasked with coordinating peacekeeping operations.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey, while addressing business leaders in London on Monday, confirmed the deployment, stating that British forces, with their expertise and operational experience, could play a key role in establishing long-term regional stability.
Healey also announced that a senior British officer has been appointed as deputy commander to the U.S. mission chief and will lead a civil-military coordination center. The center is expected to include participation from Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates, reflecting a broader multinational approach to ensuring peace in Gaza.
The move comes just a week after UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said that the government had no plans to send troops to Israel, marking a significant policy shift amid growing international efforts to maintain peace in the region.
