Israel’s Minister for Immigration and Absorption, Amichai Chikli, has sparked controversy by accusing New York’s newly elected Mayor, Zahran Mamdani, of supporting the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.
In a statement posted on social media, Chikli claimed that “the city once seen as a global symbol of freedom has now handed its keys to a Hamas supporter.” His remarks came just days after Mamdani made history as New York’s first Muslim and youngest mayor.
The Israeli minister further alleged that Mamdani’s views were “no different from the jihadist extremists who killed 3,000 civilians on 9/11,” drawing sharp criticism from human rights advocates and community leaders who called the comments inflammatory and Islamophobic.
Chikli warned that “New York will never be the same again, especially for the Jewish community,” claiming the city was heading “into the same dark abyss that London has already fallen into.”
However, contrary to Chikli’s remarks, a segment of conservative Jewish groups in New York expressed support for Mamdani during the election, staging demonstrations against Zionism and calling for a more inclusive city government.
Zahran Mamdani’s victory marks a historic moment in American politics, as he not only becomes New York’s first Muslim mayor but also the youngest person ever to hold the position. His campaign focused on social justice, equality, and the empowerment of working-class and immigrant communities.
