Canadian PM Mark Carney Apologizes to Trump Over Anti-Tariff Political Ad

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has apologized to U.S. President Donald Trump over a controversial anti-tariff political advertisement, which sparked diplomatic tension between Ottawa and Washington.

According to international news agencies, Carney said during a media briefing that he had personally apologized to President Trump for the ad and clarified that he had instructed Ontario Premier Doug Ford not to air it.

The Prime Minister revealed that he had reviewed the advertisement with Ford before its release and had objected to its use, but the Ontario leader, known for his conservative views and frequent comparisons to Trump, decided to proceed with broadcasting it.

The anti-tariff ad reportedly featured a quote from former Republican President Ronald Reagan, warning that “tariffs lead to trade wars and economic ruin.” Following the ad’s release, President Trump announced higher tariffs on Canadian imports and suspended ongoing trade talks with Canada.

The incident has highlighted growing trade friction between the two allies as both sides seek to manage their economic relations amid shifting protectionist policies in Washington.
