Defence Minister Khawaja Asif is set to present the Army Act Amendment Bill in the Senate today for approval, according to the official agenda released ahead of the session.
As per the agenda, the Defence Minister will also table the Pakistan Air Force Act Amendment Bill and the Pakistan Navy Ordinance Amendment Bill for Senate approval.
Additionally, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will present the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill for approval during the same session. All these bills have already been passed by the National Assembly and will now be taken up by the Senate.
The move follows the National Assembly’s approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, after which the Army Act 2025 was also endorsed. Under the new legislation, a fresh notification will be issued for the Army Chief as Chief of Defence Forces, effectively restarting the tenure from the date of appointment.
According to the amended Army Act, the Chief of Defence Forces will oversee the restructuring and integration of all branches of the Pakistan Army. Furthermore, the Prime Minister, on the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces, will appoint the Commander of the National Strategic Command.
The tenure of the Commander National Strategic Command will be three years, with the option of reappointment for another three-year term.
The amended law also states that the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will be abolished on November 27, marking a significant change in Pakistan’s military command structure.
