A major power breakdown has once again crippled the K-III pumping station, disrupting water supply to several areas of Karachi.
According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), electricity at the K-III facility has been suspended since midnight. Thirteen hours later, the cable fault responsible for the outage had still not been fixed. The station previously suffered a massive breakdown on November 18.
Officials said K-Electric restored power to the pumping station on November 20 after a 41-hour outage, but supply failed again only a few hours later due to another cable fault. The utility had also carried out a shutdown on November 17 to repair the same fault.
The latest suspension has triggered water shortages across large parts of the city. North Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Scheme-33 are among the worst affected areas. Water supply has also been disrupted in multiple blocks of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, as well as in New Karachi, Saddar and Clifton.
KWSC officials warned that the ongoing electricity failure has created a shortfall of 335 million gallons of water citywide. They said the K-Electric administration has been formally alerted to the growing crisis.
Authorities added that the Dhabeji pumping station has also faced repeated outages in recent weeks, with K-Electric suspending power for several hours on November 5, 11, 13 and 15 due to similar cable faults.
City officials say the repeated disruptions underscore the vulnerability of Karachi’s water infrastructure and the urgent need for stable power supply to critical pumping stations.
