U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that federal funding for New York City could be at risk if Zohran Mamdani is elected as mayor. Speaking in a televised interview, Trump said it would be “a waste of money” to send federal funds to a city “run by a communist.”

“If New York is led by someone like Mamdani, it’ll be a disaster,” Trump remarked, drawing a comparison between Mamdani and former mayor Bill de Blasio. “De Blasio was a failed mayor — but Mamdani would be even worse,” he added.

The President also indirectly expressed support for Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York and one of Mamdani’s main rivals. “If I have to choose between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’ll always prefer the bad Democrat,” Trump said.

The New York mayoral election is being held today, featuring Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Rettis Silva. According to recent polls, Mamdani is currently leading with 44% support, followed by Cuomo with 33%, and Silva at 14%.

Mamdani, who has gained popularity among progressive voters, has pledged to freeze rents, introduce free public transport, and expand childcare programs if elected.

Political analysts say Trump’s remarks could further polarize the race, as Mamdani’s campaign is built on promises of economic equality and social reform — policies that conservatives often label as “socialist.”
