WhatsApp Revives Classic ‘About Status’ With a Modern 24-Hour Update Feature

A major change has been made to WhatsApp / Photo File (@tech_lagi)

WhatsApp is bringing back one of its oldest features — the original text-based status — but with a modern twist aimed at making personal updates more useful and visible.

A decade ago, users shared simple text statuses on WhatsApp before the feature was relocated to the “About” section. Now, the company has announced that the classic About notes are returning as a refreshed feature that allows users to share short updates with friends and contacts, which will automatically disappear after 24 hours.

In a blog post, WhatsApp said the update is designed to make the About section more practical. Instead of sending images or videos, users can now share quick text updates about their availability, mood or daily plans.

The feature is particularly helpful when users want to signal that they’re busy, away from their phone, or not available for chats.

One major change is the placement of the new About notes. They will now appear pinned at the top of one-on-one chats and will also be displayed prominently on user profiles. Contacts can tap on a note to react, much like Instagram Notes, and the update will vanish after 24 hours unless removed earlier from settings.

Users will also be able to control visibility, limiting their About notes to selected contacts.

According to WhatsApp, the global rollout of this feature has already begun and will reach all users in the coming days. Once available, it can be activated through WhatsApp Settings under the “Set About” option.
