U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated the possibility of imposing new tariffs on India, further intensifying the ongoing strain in bilateral trade relations.

During a meeting at the White House, President Trump questioned Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about why India is being allowed to “dump rice” into the U.S. market. Trump asked whether India was receiving any exemptions on rice shipments and insisted, “They will have to pay tariffs. Do they have any concessions on rice?”

In response, Treasury Secretary Bessent said that Washington is still working on a trade agreement with New Delhi.

Recent Strain in U.S.-India Relations

Over the past several months, relations between the United States and India have cooled significantly. India has yet to finalize a trade deal with Washington, prompting dissatisfaction in the Trump administration.

Earlier, President Trump imposed a 50% tariff on certain Indian products after India failed to conclude the trade agreement, marking a notable escalation in the trade dispute.

With Trump now signaling additional tariffs, analysts believe trade tensions between the two countries may worsen unless negotiations make progress.
