The Karachi Commissioner has imposed a two-month ban on road excavation and road cutting across the city under Section 144, issuing a formal notification to curb rising accidents and public inconvenience.
According to the notification, multiple institutions have carried out road and footpath digging for utility services, leading to an increase in traffic accidents and damage to infrastructure. Authorities noted that similar restrictions had been imposed earlier, but repeated violations were reported.
The ban will remain in force for two months, during which all government bodies, utility agencies, and private entities must obtain prior approval from both the city administration and the Sindh government before conducting any excavation work.
Meanwhile, the Sindh government has approved the release of Rs1.5 billion for the rehabilitation of rain-damaged roads in Karachi. The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah.
The meeting was attended by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Provincial Minister for Planning and Development Nasir Shah, Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, the Chief Secretary, and other senior officials. It was agreed that roads in all seven districts of Karachi require urgent patchwork and repairs.
Briefing the meeting, Minister Saeed Ghani said that a detailed survey of Karachi’s roads is underway to determine when and how the roads were damaged. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed authorities to conduct inquiries into roads that deteriorated prematurely and to take strict action against contractors responsible for substandard construction.
The Chief Minister also instructed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to ensure proper drainage systems and service lanes with every new road project, emphasizing that repair and construction work must meet the highest quality standards. The mayor confirmed that Rs1.5 billion was required for the planned work, which the Chief Minister approved.
