The preliminary investigation into the deadly explosion caused by a gas leak in Islamabad’s Sector G-7 has been completed, with initial findings confirming gas leakage as the likely cause, sources said on Sunday.
According to officials, the powerful blast completely destroyed three houses and partially damaged two others. The incident resulted in the deaths of eight people, while 11 individuals sustained injuries. Most fatalities occurred due to people being trapped under debris or suffering severe burn injuries.
Authorities said two of the deceased were shifted to CDA Hospital, while six bodies were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). All bodies have since been handed over to their families, with burials scheduled to take place at H-8 Cemetery.
The explosion occurred at approximately 7:19 am, and police along with rescue teams reached the scene within 18 minutes, at around 7:37 am. Initial rescue efforts were carried out by local residents before official emergency teams took control of the operation.
Rescue officials noted that narrow streets in the area hindered the movement of heavy machinery, causing delays in clearing debris and conducting rescue operations effectively.
Investigators have collected samples from gas pipelines and internal connections to determine where the gas accumulated and identify the ignition source. Eyewitness statements and testimonies from affected residents are also being recorded as part of the investigation.
As a precautionary measure, gas and electricity supplies to the G-7 area have been temporarily suspended. Police, rescue services, district administration, forensic experts, and gas utility companies are expected to conduct a joint investigation to establish responsibility and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Following the blast, a large number of relatives, local residents, and affected families gathered at the site, as authorities continued assessment and relief efforts.
